Simulacrum
Simulacrum to kopia bez oryginału – obraz powielany tak długo, aż zajmuje miejsce osoby, którą miał przedstawiać. Taki wizerunek żydowskiego sąsiada przez lata utrwalała dawna prasa lwowska – podobiznę, która wyparła człowieka i zastąpiła go sloganami. A w samym słowie – niemal przypadkiem – kryje się sacrum. Nie chodzi o świętość, lecz o to, co w człowieku nietykalne. A simulacrum is a copy without an original – an image reproduced so long that it takes the place of the person it was meant to depict. For years the old Lviv press fixed just such an image of the Jewish neighbour – a likeness that supplanted the human being and replaced him with slogans. And within the word itself, almost by accident, hides a sacrum. Not holiness, but what is inviolable in a person.
Antologia materiałów z prasy lwowskiej dotyczących Żydów. Seria zbiera różne obrazy, by je oddać czytelniczej analizie po 150 latach. Surowy język źródeł przytaczamy w brzmieniu epoki i zawsze jako świadectwo. An anthology of material from the Lviv press concerning Jews. The series gathers these varied images in order to open them to the reader’s analysis, 150 years on. The raw language of the sources is quoted in the wording of its era, and always as testimony.

Znak seriiThe series mark
Opracowanie znaku serii, który oddawałby jej ducha, było nie lada wyzwaniem. Szczególnie w obliczu założonego obiektywizmu i metody doboru tekstów, zakładającej równowagę i proporcję w stosunku do stanu, jaki jest w lwowskich gazetach. Jednak to, co seria ma podkreślić przede wszystkim, to bezdyskusyjna nieobecność. Pierwszą wersją znaku był sam tekst, lecz nie sygnalizował on za wiele. Druga wersja powstała dość szybko. Designing a mark for the series that would carry its spirit was no small challenge. The more so given the objectivity we set ourselves and a method of selection that assumes balance and proportion in relation to what is actually there in the Lviv papers. What the series has to underline above all, however, is an indisputable absence. The first version of the mark was the text alone, but it signalled little. The second version came quite quickly.

Literę „a” zmieniliśmy na Gwiazdę Dawida. Teraz mamy poczucie, że znak serii jest godny i kompletny. We changed the letter ‘a’ into the Star of David. Now the mark feels dignified and complete.

Dalej już tylko niewielkie eksperymenty z krojem czcionki, przeniesienie idei do komputera i rysunek, który można drukować w każdej wielkości. After that, only small experiments with the typeface, the move of the idea onto the computer, and a drawing that can be printed at any size.

Przeszukuje zdigitalizowane roczniki prasy, zlicza trafienia i pokazuje, jak rozkładają się w czasie i między tytułami. We run the search with our own software – Wyszukiwarka Gazet Lwowskich, written for this series and now in its fourteenth version. It searches digitised runs of the press, counts the hits and shows how they spread across the years and between titles.

Prasa sprzed stu i dwustu lat czyta się maszynowo źle. Łamana fraktura, druk rozstrzelony dla podkreślenia, kolumny rozsypane na wąskie szpalty, papier przetarty na zgięciach, skan zrobiony pod kątem – zwykłe rozpoznawanie tekstu gubi na takich stronach słowa albo skleja je w takie, których nigdy nie było. Newspapers one and two centuries old are read badly by machines. Broken Fraktur, type letter-spaced for emphasis, columns split into narrow strips, paper worn through at the folds, a page photographed at an angle – ordinary text recognition loses words on such pages, or fuses them into words that never existed.
Dlatego program korzysta ze sztucznej inteligencji – wspiera ona rozpoznawanie tekstu tam, gdzie sam OCR sobie nie radzi. That is why the program uses artificial intelligence – it assists text recognition wherever plain OCR falls short.
Wszystko opiera się na ponad 300 GB materiałów pobranych z Jagiellońskiej Biblioteki Cyfrowej; na nich program buduje indeks szukanych haseł i sam wskazuje przedruki. Co z nich zostaje, rozstrzyga już człowiek – analiza materiału jest w całości ręczna i tu działa wyłącznie ludzka wiedza i intuicja. It all rests on over 300 GB of material downloaded from the Jagiellonian Digital Library, on which the program builds an index of the search terms and flags reprints by itself. What survives that is decided by a human – the analysis of the material is done entirely by hand, and here only human knowledge and intuition will do.
